What stands out

The U.S. electricity transition is less a straight fossil-to-renewable swap than a two-step handoff: coal retreats sharply, gas expands, and renewables keep compounding.

Since 2005, renewable electricity added 806 TWh while coal generation fell by 1.3k TWh. Gas absorbed much of coal’s decline, so the U.S. grid became cleaner mainly through substitution inside the fossil stack plus steady renewable growth.

The key crossover arrives in 2020, when renewables’ share of generation moved above coal. By 2025, renewables reached 25.6% of generation, while gas remained the single largest source at 40.0%.

Wind and solar together supplied 18.9% of generation in 2025 and first exceeded hydro in 2016. Per-capita electricity use sits near 13.0k kWh, showing a flatter demand profile than the build-out of clean generation sources.
